Academy Returns to Training

Director of Football Kevin Spriggs discusses our return to training, COVID protocols in place and academy players in the first team.

'We have held a number of open days this week with a host of talented players eager to impress our Senior Academy management. We have been impressed with players fitness levels since the lockdown period and are now excited to work with them towards the Football League Club pathways we have in place.

We have implemented COVID-19 protocols and screening to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our scholars and now look forward to making our scholars feel at ease during their training sessions. Our last series of open sessions are next week so if there are high performing players they will be encouraged to join our academy. So far we have signed players from the likes of Charlton, Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion, Blackpool, Southend and Watford with many more being given a second chance opportunity with us.

We are also delighted to welcome new staff additions with ex professional footballers Derek Duncan, Nic Taylor and Tim Moffatt who add even more playing experience to the team. Further details will be announced shortly.

The Academy have also cemented its position with our club affiliates to provide opportunities for our scholars to compete in the FA Youth Cup. We have also secured a deal with ADIDAS to provide our scholars with free training and match kit. We can now switch focus on producing even more professional footballers and with the introduction of our development squad, we are now able to bridge the gap between youth and senior levels to continue our ambition of producing homegrown talent. We have an exciting announcement in the coming weeks and are really looking forward to our next phase of pre season.
